When Oura first came out — my first real sleep tracker — I became obsessed. Every morning before I got out of bed I checked the ring. The number told me whether the day was already won or already lost.
A good score and I trained too hard, convinced I was fresh. A bad score and I rode poorly, then slept worse the next night, then dragged the mood into the house. My partner felt it. The team felt it. The ring did not feel anything. It produced numbers I treated as truth, and I rebuilt my day around them.
After a while I noticed something. The score was not telling me how I had slept. It was telling me what mood to be in for the day.
What the tracker actually measures
Wrist and ring trackers do not measure your brain waves. They measure heart rate, movement, and skin temperature, and run those signals through an algorithm trained on lab data. The output is an estimate.
Only polysomnography — the sleep-lab test with electrodes on your scalp — actually measures the electrical activity that defines sleep stages. The trackers are reasonably good at one thing: how long you slept. In one validation of the Oura ring, its total-sleep-time estimate landed within half an hour of the lab on roughly seven nights in eight. But the moment it tries to call the stages — light, deep, REM — epoch-by-epoch agreement with the lab falls to somewhere around half. Good at detecting that you are asleep. Weak at calling what kind of sleep it is. Your four-hundred-euro wearable is making an educated guess about the very stages your score weights most, and presenting it as a verdict.

Even accurate numbers answer the wrong question
If the measurement were exact, it would still answer the wrong question. The score tells you what your body coped with last night. It does not tell you whether you are capable of sleeping well.
The baseline is your own recent history. Six months of chronic activation becomes your "normal." A green ring means you are not worse than your bad average. It does not mean you are recovered. It cannot tell you what is possible, because possibility was never one of its inputs.

Orthosomnia
Sleep medicine has a name for the trap I was caught in. Orthosomnia — the condition of sleeping worse because you are anxious about sleeping well. The act of watching the number activates the sympathetic nervous system the number is supposed to detect.
Researchers named the pattern in 2017, and sleep clinics now see it regularly: athletes, executives, parents of newborns reaching for the tracker first thing in the morning. The tool that promised optimization became the source of dysregulation. The wearable bought to help recovery became one of the reasons recovery was no longer possible.
I was in this loop for years before I understood it.

Sleep is not a skill. It is integration.
Here my view starts to differ from the mainstream. Sleep is not a skill you optimize the way running is a skill. It is not a separate biological function running independent of the rest of you. Sleep is integration. The body, while you are unconscious, processes everything the day demanded and everything the day suppressed.
REM consolidates memory and emotion. During REM, the brain reorganizes the day's emotional content in a state of low noradrenaline — rather than re-traumatizing it. Take that night away, and the amygdala, the brain's threat detector, becomes roughly sixty percent more reactive the next day, while the prefrontal cortex that regulates it functionally disconnects. You wake up not just tired. You wake up emotionally unstable, mentally slower, and physically less able to recover.

This is why so many high performers wake at three in the morning. It is not insomnia in the medical sense. It is the body processing what it had no permission to feel earlier. A day full of unprocessed activation produces a night full of restless integration. You can fix the bedroom — cold room, blackout curtains, no caffeine, magnesium glycinate — and still wake up tired, because the work the body needed to do at night was too much for the time it had.
The score treats sleep as separable from the day. It is not separable. It is the closing chapter of the day. If the day was an open loop, the night cannot close it — no matter how many supplements you stack on the bedside table.
Sleep is the deepest point of the wave
Sleep is the deepest point of the pulsation I wrote about last week. Sympathetic and parasympathetic are two phases of one motion. Sleep is the parasympathetic at its maximum depth. You cannot reach the deepest point of a wave you cannot move through during the day.

This is the part the recovery industry refuses to say. You cannot hack sleep. You cannot force sleep. You can only prepare the conditions in which sleep arrives. Mainstream advice — no caffeine after two, blue-light glasses, cold room, weighted blanket — is not wrong. It is insufficient. All of it speaks to the surface. None of it speaks to the reason your nervous system cannot descend.
Acceptance, not pressure. Trying harder to relax is a sympathetic act. The decision to sleep is the obstacle to sleeping. The body does not respond to instruction. It responds to conditions.
The bedroom is the test. The classroom is the day. The tracker can tell you whether you passed the test. It cannot tell you whether you attended the class.
What sleep actually requires from you
What the body needs from you to sleep well is not what the recovery industry sells. It needs daytime parasympathetic capacity. It needs awareness — the capacity to feel what is rising before you push it back down. And it needs the body to feel safe enough to surrender control.

This is the work. Somatic exercises and structured breath protocols during the day. Months, not nights. Not hacks, not tools, not optimization. Slow physiology. When this work is done, sleep returns without the supplements, without the score, without the cold-room ritual — not because you mastered sleep, but because you finally gave it room to happen.
This is what the recovery industry cannot package. It cannot be sold in a box. It does not have a brand or a subscription. It takes time.
You cannot hack sleep.
You can only give it room to happen.
