I attacked on a Tour de France stage. I don't remember the exact kilometer. I remember what happened next.
Another rider came across to me. We started trading pulls at the front — clean, mechanical, no words. He would come through, I would sit on, recover, come back to the front. It was working. The pace was hard but manageable. My legs were there.
And then, in one ordinary pull, I watched him come past me and something shifted. Not in the race. In me.
He didn't do anything different. He didn't accelerate. He didn't look at me. He just rode. But in that moment he felt faster than me in a way that had nothing to do with the numbers. He felt like someone operating at a level I didn't belong at.
And somewhere below any conscious decision, I already knew how this was going to end.
I didn't crack physically. I kept following his wheel. I kept taking my turns at the front. My body was still in the race. But I had already left it. I had already accepted an outcome that hadn't happened yet, based on a feeling that had nothing to do with what was actually in front of me.
He wasn't better than me that day. But I was completely certain that he was — and that certainty was older than cycling. It came from something I had carried for years. A belief that in the real moments, the ones that actually count, I was not quite enough. Not in sport. Not in life.
I handed him that race from the inside. And I didn't understand why for a long time.
Your nervous system is not a camera. It is a forecaster.
Your nervous system is continuously running one question: based on everything that has happened before in situations that look like this, what is most likely to happen now? And the answer arrives before you consciously think anything. Before you decide. Before you even know something is changing.
Lisa Feldman Barrett calls this predictive processing. The brain is not a passive receiver of reality. It is an active forecasting system that constantly compares what is coming in with patterns from the past. It doesn't wait for evidence. It predicts. Then it filters everything you see, hear, and feel through that prediction.

Under pressure, this forecaster doesn't know it's a new day. It doesn't know you've trained six months for this. It doesn't know you're better now than you were the last time something like this went wrong.
It knows one thing: this situation resembles the situations where it went wrong before. So it forecasts: it's going wrong again.
The gap looks bigger. The opponent feels faster. The effort feels unmanageable. The outcome feels decided. And it's not because the race is that way. Because your history is.
Why experienced athletes get hit the hardest
Here is the paradox nobody says out loud. The athlete who has survived the most difficult moments — the most crises, the most races that fell apart at exactly the wrong time — has the richest database of negative forecasts.
The system learned from every single one of those moments. Carefully. Precisely. It stored the patterns: what the gap looks like before I lose position. What the effort feels like before I blow up. What it sounds like inside my head before I give up.
The athlete with little difficult history doesn't have this system. They race with a kind of confidence that sometimes works simply because the forecaster has no bad data to draw from.
Experience, which should be your greatest advantage, becomes a filter that colors every high-pressure moment with the history of every previous failure.
That is not weakness. That is biology. The system is doing exactly what it was built to do. The problem is it cannot distinguish between "this situation is objectively dangerous" and "this situation feels like the ones from my past that went wrong."
And the belief at the bottom of the forecast — the one that says I am not enough — is not a sports belief. It was written before sport existed in your life. It was written in the moments when a child looked up and found something other than safety. Sport didn't create that belief. Sport just found it every time the pressure was high enough.
Why willpower cannot reach the forecaster
When an athlete understands this, the first instinct is: I'll just think differently. Tell myself the belief is wrong. Remind myself of the evidence. Use a mental cue. Reframe the moment.
This doesn't work. And the reason is not lack of effort.
The forecaster doesn't live where conscious thought lives. It operates in the body — in patterns of muscle tone, in the way the diaphragm moves or doesn't move, in the chronic tension held in the ribcage and belly that has been there so long it feels like normal.
The body keeps the score. Not the memory. The physical record. In tissue, in breath, in tone.

When you say "I believe in myself," you are talking to the cortex. The forecaster is listening to the body. It is listening to whether your breath is short or full. Whether your belly is braced or soft. Whether your jaw is set or released.
If the body is saying danger, the forecaster believes the body. Not you.
This is why "just back yourself" works for athletes who don't yet have enough history for the forecaster to push back. For an experienced athlete under real pressure, a thought cannot reach what has already been decided below the surface.
The only thing that actually changes the forecast
What I didn't know then — and what took years to understand — is that the solution was never on the climb. It was never in the race. It was in the baseline of the system I brought to the race.
The forecast threshold is not fixed.
When your nervous system's baseline is chronically elevated — when your body carries constant low-grade tension in the trunk, when the diaphragm is tight and restricted, when the breath never quite reaches the belly even on easy days — then the gap between your daily state and a threat response is small. It doesn't take much to push the system over the edge.

But when the baseline is lower — when the body has learned that resting is safe, that letting go doesn't mean falling apart, that the belly can be soft and the jaw can be released without anything collapsing — then the same pressure lands differently.
The same external pressure. A completely different internal response. This is not a race-day adjustment. This is a reorganization of the system from which every perception under pressure is born.

These are not just physical patterns. They are the physical record of every time the system decided the world was dangerous and held on.
Somatic work — real somatic work, not stretching or breathing exercises as techniques — is the process of gradually teaching the body that it can release what it has been holding. Not through force. Through attention.
When the diaphragm begins to move more freely, CO₂ tolerance improves. When the belly softens as a default rather than as a deliberate intervention, the nervous system's baseline tone drops. When the ribcage stops being permanently contracted around protection, breath becomes available as a resource rather than a symptom.
And when the physical record in the body starts to change, the forecast changes with it. Not because you told yourself a better story. Because the body that generates the story started living differently.
The belief that I wasn't enough — that was never going to change on a climb in France. It was going to change in the quiet, unglamorous work of learning to let the body hold less. Day by day. Week by week. Until the baseline dropped far enough that the same pressure stopped triggering the same response.
